Mikel Arteta has had the beating of Jurgen Klopp’s men in their last two meetings although I’m not sure anyone is expecting this weekend’s game against Liverpool to be a third in a row for the Gunners.
Arsenal and Liverpool have a long history, first meeting back in 1893 when Woolwich Arsenal were thumped 5-0 by the Scousers. Let’s hope that’s not an omen of things to come, although the number ‘5’ has certainly featured heavily in the history of this fixture.
The home side has scored five goals eight times over the life of this fixture:
As you can see very clearly from that list, three of those eight came in the last six years when Liverpool were on their rise and Arsenal very much at the bottom of a trough.
The away side, however, has only scored five goal on three occasions, although Arsenal were the side that did it twice (but only won one):
The best match was, obviously, Arsenal’s 1989 title win at Anfield.
