Arsenal and Liverpool meet this weekend in what will be the biggest test for Mikel Arteta this season so far but what is their head-to-head record like?

Mikel Arteta has had the beating of Jurgen Klopp’s men in their last two meetings although I’m not sure anyone is expecting this weekend’s game against Liverpool to be a third in a row for the Gunners.

Arsenal and Liverpool have a long history, first meeting back in 1893 when Woolwich Arsenal were thumped 5-0 by the Scousers. Let’s hope that’s not an omen of things to come, although the number ‘5’ has certainly featured heavily in the history of this fixture.

The home side has scored five goals eight times over the life of this fixture:

  • Woolwich Arsenal 5 vs 0 Liverpool, 20 February 1909
  • Liverpool 5 vs 1 Woolwich Arsenal, 1 January 1910
  • Liverpool 5 vs 2 Arsenal, 26 August 1922
  • Arsenal 5 vs 3 Liverpool, 4 April 1953
  • Liverpool 5 vs 0 Arsenal, 18 April 1964
  • Liverpool 5 vs 1 Arsenal, 8 February 2014
  • Liverpool 5 s 1 Arsenal, 29 December 2018
  • Liverpool 5 vs 5 Arsenal, 30 October 2019 (Liverpool won on penalties after it finished a 5-5 draw).

As you can see very clearly from that list, three of those eight came in the last six years when Liverpool were on their rise and Arsenal very much at the bottom of a trough.

The away side, however, has only scored five goal on three occasions, although Arsenal were the side that did it twice (but only won one):

  • Woolwich Arsenal 1 vs Liverpool 5, 28 October 1893
  • Liverpool 1 vs Arsenal 5, 15 November 1952
  • Liverpool 5 vs 5 Arsenal, 30 October 2019 (Arsenal lost on penalties).

The best match was, obviously, Arsenal’s 1989 title win at Anfield.
