Cameroon Football Federation slashes salaries of Guinness Super League players | OneFootball

The Cameroon Football Federation has announced a 50 percent cut to the salaries of the women who play in the country’s Guinness Super League.

According to Cameroonian journalist Evra Geraud, the official announcement was made by the federation’s Secretary General Blaise Djounang on a press release dated December 23rd.

The cut comes just five months after pay was increased in July this year.

Hoping to improve player welfare, the players’ minimum salaries increased from 50,000 FCFA to 100,000 FCFA. However, as per the announcement made by the federation, the players will now go back to earning a minimum of 50,000 FCFA, equivalent to about £67.

The reason for the decision is unclear. The effects of the salary cut on clubs remain to be seen, as most players are contracted to earn a minimum of 100,000 FCFA.

The initial report has not specified how regularly the player will receive this payment — whether it is on a game-by-game basis, for example.

National players in the Guinness Super League

The Cameroon Women’s National Team is no stranger to big tournaments.

They made their World Cup debut in Canada in 2015 and have reached the round of 16 ever since.

As recently as the summer of 2022, Cameroon reached the quarter-finals of the Women’s African Cup of Nations. They are set to face Thailand in the inter-confederation playoffs for a spot in the 2023 Women’s World Cup.

Six of the Indomitable Lionesses 26-strong WAFCON squad play their club football in the Guiness Super League. Including two of their keepers — Pauline Ayangma and Flore Enyengue — who represent Ebolowa FC and Canon Yaounde respectively.

Flora Kameni, 17-year-old Monique Ngock, Kevine Ossol, and Ousmanou Doudou are the others who ply their trade in their local league. Now, with salaries cut, it’s a far cry from their teammates who play in the NWSL and Serie A.

The Guinness Super League has been running since 1990 and currently boasts 12 teams. The 2022/23 season is set to kick off on January 14th.
