Cameroon beat Brazil in the final match day of the group stage, in what was a chaotic finale to the group stage. The win wasn’t enough to help them progress, however it was a memorable and iconic moment that is among the best at the tournament to date and capped off an incredibly entertaining group stage at this World Cup.

Brazil have incredible depth

Against Cameroon, Brazil rotated fully from the team they started in the opening two games. Even with 11 changes, they still have players of the calibre of Gabriel Jesus, Antony and Eder Militao. Not to mention Bruno Guimaeres who hasn’t even made the reserve side. While they lost, Brazil still looked good, and having this level of depth will only ever be a good thing.

The group stage format cannot change.

It is widely known now that FIFA plan to change to group stage format for the 2026 World Cup with groups of three being proposed, but just using today as an example shows why this can’t happen. The final match day of the group stage brings with it some of the tournaments most exciting minutes, something we will lose if FIFA get their way. So please FIFA, don’t change this.

Aboubakar has achieved cult status

In the dying minutes, Vincent Aboubakar within the space of a minute, scored the winner, celebrated and then received his second yellow card for removing his top in celebration. If Cameroon had progressed he would have missed out on playing, but now knowing they didn’t what a way to bow out. Scoring the winner against the potential favourites to go all the way, then bowing out with your top off showcasing your shredded physique. Instant cult hero.
