Cambridge are currently sixteenth in League One and their home league crowds this season have fluctuated between 4,019 (v Gillingham) and 7,944 (v Ipswich).

Though only 2,834 turned up on Saturday as Cambridge fans saw their team beat Exeter 2-1 to reach the third round and a trip to Tyneside.

The last home league match saw Cambridge lose 2-1 to Sunderland in front of 7,174 at the end of November.

Speaking of Sunderland…no sign of them in Monday night’s draw (see full draw below) because as far back as 6 November 2021, in the FA Cup first round, the Mackems losing 1-0 at home to Mansfield.

The FA Cup third round ties will take place on the weekend Saturday 8 January 2022, with no doubt most Cambridge fans hoping that the game at St James Park stays as a 3pm Saturday match. At least that is, most of the Cambridge fans who are fancying coming up for the match.

This is how Cambridge fans have been reacting to the third round FA Cup draw via Twitter:

‘Absolute belter of a draw there, Newcastle United away.’

‘Arguably our BIGGEST AWAY GAME since OT in 2015!

Incredible City, Incredible Stadium, Incredible Fans

Fill the stands with our Amber Army!

The Atmosphere will be ELECTRIC

How we love the FA CUP.’

‘Where can visiting fans go for a drink?’

(Newcastle fan) ‘Hi Lads! Good Luck for the game….gentle reminder, in Newcastle we don’t have away pubs! Just find a pub, grab a pint and enjoy the away day.’

(Newcastle fan) ‘Looking forward to seeing you all, we also have the highest amount of pubs close to the ground compared to any other English team.’

‘Isn’t it something daft like 100 pubs more than whoever is in 2nd place?’

‘I’ve done it with the Arsenal – epic away trip. What you gain in proximity to the station and pubs/clubs you lose in terms of that oxygen-required schlep up to the highest away section in British football Bring the binoculars!’

‘It’ll be Sunday lunchtime.’

‘Stick a holiday in now then.’

‘My first match was at home against Newcastle, so this makes me very happy.

I hope Andy Cole won’t be fit for this one because he battered us in 93.’

‘Dreaming of a 3rd Round upset at the richest club in world football!

Incredible Stadium and City- Get up there CUFC Fans!!’

‘Long trip Jesus Christ.’

‘Yeah a long 2h 20m from Peterborough.’

‘Just about the best possible option for me, absolutely brilliant.’

‘It’ll be an experience like no other!!’

‘6,000 tickets.’
