It has been quite the week for Celtic FC Women defender Caitlin Hayes, and she is looking to round it off by helping the Hoops to their first league title on Sunday.
With the Ghirls preparing to head into their final fixture of the campaign, it is all still to play for at the top of the SWPL with three teams competing for the title.
Ahead of Sunday’s game at Celtic Park, Hayes kicked-off the week by signing a new three-year deal with the club.
Speaking to the media previewing the match against Hearts, the defender expressed her delight at securing her long-term future at Paradise and she is hopeful she can end the week on another extremely positive note.
She said: “I was absolutely buzzing to secure my future at this football club. It’s one that I know and love.
“From here I just can’t wait to see what is next and see how the season will end!
'It’s been a fantastic week. There probably aren’t many weeks in my life that have been better!'
“These things are great, but the focus is ultimately on the 90 minutes and as a squad we have got to keep our heads down.
“I am sure there will be a moment to celebrate what we have done. But right now we have to focus on making it the best celebration possible.
“I’ve been thankful for this week, but it means nothing if the job isn’t done.”
With Celtic, Rangers and Glasgow City all still in the fight for the SWPL title, the clubs and supporters couldn’t have asked for a more tense end to what has been a fantastic season.
The Hoops will take on the Edinburgh side in the East End of Glasgow, whilst both Rangers and City battle it out at Ibrox.
Getting the opportunity to play at Celtic Park for the second time in just over a week is an exciting prospect for Hayes and her team-mates, who are relishing the fight for the title on the final day.
“I’ve probably not experienced anything quite like this,” she said. “I think it’s a script that no one could have written up at the beginning of the season before it started.
“Relishing in the moment is either something you do or don’t, and there are a lot of factors that come into whether you do or don’t.
'What we will all do is enjoy the moment. To play the game with our team-mates, and in front of the supporters at Celtic Park – it’s a dream come true for a lot of us.'
“So I can’t wait for that moment and just fingers crossed everything goes our way.”
Should the Celts come out on top at Paradise on Sunday, they will be hoping that other results go their way in order to become league winners.
Although the Ghirls are relying on other results, it is important that the squad simply focuses on the task at hand and that is picking up another important three points against Hearts.
That is a message that Hayes was keen to stress, as she eyes up more silverware after helping the club lift a cup double last campaign.
She said: “It would mean the world to win the league. You don’t need to ask me that question to figure out how I would or anyone in the team would feel!
“But there is wanting it, and then there is doing it. Hopefully, we can do everything on Sunday to leave the power in our hands by getting the job done.
“It’s a point I keep making, but it is important that we focus on the game and do what we need to do. Not focusing on anything else other than our own performance.
'When that final whistle goes we’ll lift our heads, and see what is in front of us. If it’s meant to be, it will be.'
“But I’m just thankful for this season and fingers crossed it can finish how we all want it to.”
It all comes down to the final afternoon of the SWPL campaign as any one of three teams can clinch the title on the last day.
A glance at the table tells you anything can happen. Any of the three can finish top on the day, and with Rangers taking on City at Ibrox at the same time as the Ghirls host Hearts at Celtic Park, it makes for a nail-biting day.
It’s all there to be fought for and YOU could play your part by making Paradise a cauldron of noise to spur on the Ghirls to the title and match their male counterparts as champions.
Don’t miss out on what could be a historic day.
