Holders meet second tier leaders

Tuesday sees current holders Borussia Dortmund travel north to face high-flying Sankt Pauli. The Hamburg club sit top of the 2. Bundesliga but haven’t won in their last three league games, drawing 2-2 with 17th-placed Erzgebirge Aue at the weekend.

St Pauli will attack and attack and attack – they don’t know anything else – in the hope of an upset.

Will they pull one off against a Dortmund side that appears to be approaching top form?

Derby day in the capital

Who doesn’t love derby day? A bonus Berlin derby serving is an absolute treat.

The two capital clubs are having very different seasons, with Hertha hoping to escape a relegation fight while Union eye the lofty heights of the Champions League places.

The Pokal could be a bit of an escape for the hosts, who have won the last two Olympiastadion meetings between the teams 4-0 and 3-1, but they will have to be at their very best.

East meets … East!

Hansa Rostock are the last East German champions. RB Leipzig have become the Bundesliga’s leading team based in what was East Germany. Expect fireworks.

Hansa are back in the second tier after nine seasons below that level but they haven’t won a game since 6 November, surely that won’t change in this one?

Inconsistent Gladbach play away

Borussia Mönchengladbach blew Bayern Munich away in the last round. They have, sensationally, beaten Bayern twice and drawn with them once this season. Even more sensationally, given that record, they have lost nine of the 18 games they haven’t played against the champions this season.

Inconsistency has followed them around and should give Hannover, inconsistent but with three wins from their last four, plenty to believe in.

Bundesliga surprise packaged have high hopes

The two surprise packages of the Bundesliga season, Hoffenheim and Freiburg sit fourth and sixth respectively heading into this one.

Both sides lost in the league at the weekend but have shown they can challenge anyone in Germany this season. With no Pokals between them to date, history could be just around the corner for whoever wins this one and places themselves just two more victories from the final.
