A turnaround could happen following Mats Hummel's announcement of his retirement from football at the end of the current season. Borussia Dortmund is reportedly considering a move for the former BVB legend to return to the Signal Iduna Park for a brief spell, according to BILD. The idea is to have Hummels back at the squad for the dispute of the Club World Cup in June, especially in the light of Nico Schlotterbeck's injury.
According to reports, Mats Hummels would be considered a 'stand-by' player as BVB looks depleted at the center-back position at the moment. With Nico's injury and Dortmund's problematic defensive track record this season, the board would consider offering a two-month, low-risk type of contract to Hummels. Following his likely last few matches at the helm, BVB is also possibly considering installing Mats in another position at the club if he desires.
BVB manager Niko Kovač was asked about a potential return from Mats Hummels at today's press conference before the weekend's der Klassiker. He paid compliments to his former player, said he heard the rumors, but dismissed any possibilities of a return at the moment:
"Mats is an exceptionally good footballer who has achieved a lot in his life. He is very important here at BVB. I personally hear about that too, yes. But I have Bayern in front of me tomorrow."Niko Kovač
He also gave some insights on his time coaching Hummels in Münich and highlighted his good relationship with Mats despite not playing him regularly:
"My relationship with Mats was good from my point of view. It was a good fit on a personal level. Even if I had to make decisions, and even if he did not always play."Niko Kovač
As reported by Sky Sports, Mats Hummels could very well imagine one 'last dance' in Black-and-Yellow, although there is still no certainty that Dortmund will make a move to convince the veteran to return. Even if it all seems like rumors and speculation as it stands, that would be a topic to keep an eye on.
