Barcelona confirmed their second place in La Liga following a goalless draw against Getafe on Sunday at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez.

The Blaugrana came into the game needing a point to ensure that they finish second in the standings. And while they dominated possession for large parts of the game, the Catalans could not carve out many clear-cut chances.

At the same time, Getafe, too, did not threaten going forward as the clash ended in a dour goalless draw, with Barça mustering up only one shot on target. Nevertheless, it was enough for Xavi’s side to finish second and their hosts to ensure safety in La Liga.

Speaking to the media after the game, Barcelona captain Sergio Busquets reflected on what has been a difficult campaign for the club, saying: “It has been a very complicated season… A lot of changes and many injuries. We have not been as regular as we wanted.”

Talking about the performance versus Getafe, the veteran midfielder said: “In the first half we were better. We tried to find the last final pass to hurt them as we knew they had five behind in the back. In the second half, we were worse.”

Busquets also touched upon the future of the team, insisting that the board must find a way to deal with the financial situation and build a strong team capable of challenging for titles.

“We have an obstacle: The economic situation of the club. We hope that the board will be able to create a competitive team to fight for titles,” the Spaniard said.

Busquets’ fellow Barcelona midfielder Riqui Puig also spoke about how the season had gone down for the Blaugrana, insisting that the second-place finish was a good achievement considering where they were midway through the campaign.

“It’s been a tough season. I believe if they had told us in December that we were going to finish second in La Liga, we wouldn’t have believed it. It’s a good achievement,” he said.

The La Masia graduate also added that the team is in the right hands with Xavi as the manager, saying: “It has been a tough season but we believe in Xavi’s project.”

With second place secured, Barcelona will finish their campaign with a home game against Villarreal next weekend.
