Birmingham City centre-back Nico Gordon will not be joining league rivals Burnley before the end of the transfer window, according to Birmingham Live journalist Brian Dick.

The Clarets have already moved to address this area with Ameen Al-Dakhil and Hjalmar Ekdal arriving at Turf Moor in recent weeks, with Jordan Beyer, Taylor Harwood-Bellis, CJ Egan-Riley and Luke McNally also joining in the summer.

However, there have also been departures with Nathan Collins, Ben Mee, James Tarkowski, Kevin Long and McNally all moving on, with the latter securing a loan move to league rivals Coventry City.

With Harwood-Bellis ruled out of action at this stage and McNally sealing a temporary switch to the Sky Blues, the prospect of another central defender arriving in Lancashire during the final days of the window may not have been surprising to many.

The Clarets have already recruited quite a few young central defenders in recent windows and Gordon’s addition wouldn’t have been a shock considering Vincent Kompany’s side have used this window and the previous summer to recruit additions for the long term.

There had been a lot of social media speculation surrounding the 20-year-old’s future – but journalist Dick has ruled out a potential move to Turf Moor for the young defender.

The Verdict:

This may not have been a good move for the player because with the likes of Egan-Riley, McNally, Al-Dakhil and Ekdal available as long-term options, it may have been difficult for him to force his way into the Clarets’ first team.

You also have to consider the fact that they are likely to be in the Premier League next season and if they do manage to win promotion, you feel Kompany will invest in two or three top-quality centre-backs to give his side the best chance of remaining afloat at the top level.

That could keep Gordon low down in the pecking order, something that wouldn’t be ideal for the player considering he’s 20 now.

Although he could potentially go out on loan a few times, he needs to be settled somewhere permanently where he can win regular first-team minutes and he could potentially get that opportunity at Birmingham.

Others may be starting ahead of him at this stage but with Dion Sanderson and Auston Trusty only on loan at St Andrew’s, a strong pre-season in the summer could allow the 20-year-old to claim a regular place in the starting lineup under John Eustace or a potential successor.
