Vincent Kompany has signed his contract as the new coach of FC Bayern. In England, some of the background to the deal is revealed.
The fact that the big FC Bayern is interested in Vincent Kompany from relegated Premier League side FC Burnley was apparently not believed by staff at the club. According to The Athletic, some Burnley staff did not take initial reports of the German club’s interest in the 38-year-old coach seriously at first.
However, according to the report, Bayern had been keeping tabs on Kompany for months – but it was only in the last fortnight that he moved to the top of the list.
According to The Athletic, Kompany was particularly attractive to Bayern due to Pep Guardiola’s influence and the Belgian’s language skills.
Vincent Kompany speaks excellent German, which was a point that appealed to Bayern. Although this was not a prerequisite for a coaching candidate, those in charge were of the opinion that it would help a new coach build a relationship with the media in Munich. The bosses also believed that this would benefit the atmosphere at FC Bayern.
They did not want to appoint a non-German-speaking coach with a large coaching staff and then risk creating a segregated group within the club. Bayern wanted to maintain a family atmosphere. However, players were not asked for their opinion before Kompany’s appointment.
Kompany’s connection to his former coach Pep Guardiola is said to have been a major incentive for the Bayern management. According to the report, Bayern sought Guardiola’s opinion and he spoke highly of his former player.
In addition, the fact that Kompany’s football suited the current Bayern squad helped to dispel any doubts about him. Internally, there is a consensus that Kompany is a coach who will continue to develop.
