Lampard has been without a club since his 2023 departure from Chelsea, meanwhile Cooper has been out of work since he left Nottingham Forest last December.

Kompany's shock move to the Bundesliga giants is set to be confirmed. Bayern have reportedly agreed a deal in principle with the Manchester City legend - a deal that will see Burnley receive just over £10m in compensation.

Reporting via his Patreon, journalist Alan Nixon has revealed that former Chelsea and Derby County manager Lampard and ex-Forest boss Cooper are both on Burnley's wishlist to replace the outgoing Kompany.

Nixon also reports that owner and chairman Alan Pace would prefer a manager with a promotion on their CV - a box Cooper ticks - or a big name in the world of football management.

Despite Lampard not having a promotion to his name, he is certainly a big name, with Nixon stating that the former Everton and Derby County boss is the kind of profile that the Clarets and their American owners and investors like.

Nixon concludes his report by revealing that insider knowledge reveals Burnley have three possible candidates in mind, with wages and bonuses not expected to be a problem in securing whichever one they want.

Cooper would be safer option

A club such as Burnley have zero intention of staying in the Championship any longer than they need to, and in order to give themselves the best chance of making it a passing visit, former Nottingham Forest manager Cooper may well be their best bet.

The Welshman is a proven winner at second tier level, having took over a Forest side that was rooted to the foot of the Championship when he took over in September 2021.

It was in that very same season that the now 44-year-old guided Forest on a remarkable rise up the division, before their fairytale story receiving a fitting ending at Wembley Stadium, as they sealed Premier League promotion over Huddersfield Town.

Many Forest fans were also disgruntled when Cooper was relieved of his duties last December, with many feeling that he was still the right man for the job.

Cooper has undoubtedly proven he's an excellent Championship manager, and should he take Burnley straight back to the top flight, he will have no doubt earned another shot at Premier League management.

Lampard would be a big gamble

Having failed to win the Belgian league with Anderlecht during his two seasons with the club, Kompany's arrival at Burnley was met with mumblings of 'big name and great player, but does that mean he's going to be a good manager?'

It was a big gamble, but ultimately Kompany blew everyone and the Championship itself away with his Burnley side, but he couldn't transition his second-tier success into the top-flight.

With Lampard, he too brings that allure of a name known in every corner of the world, but with multiple question marks hanging over his head surrounding his managerial abilities.

What Lampard will have going in his favour in terms of his managerial history, is that arguably his best and brightest spell in the dugout came in the second tier with Derby County.

Under his guidance, the Rams finished sixth in the Championship, before running out winners in one of the all-time great play-off fixtures against Leeds United, before their season came to a heartbreaking end in the play-off final.

Lampard would be a massive gamble for Burnley to take, and perhaps an unnecessary one should a proven commodity such as Cooper wants the job.
