Scott Parker has given an update on Josh Brownhill's contract situation
Burnley manager Scott Parker was tight-lipped around Josh Brownhill’s contract situation following the Clarets’ 3-1 triumph over Millwall.
The Clarets club captain bagged a brilliant brace against the Lions to cap off a fantastic campaign for both him and Burnley, as they were promoted to the Premier League and only missed out on the title due to Leeds’ superior goal difference.
Brownhill finished with 18 league goals, a remarkable return considering he missed parts of the campaign with injury troubles, ending only one strike behind the league’s top goalscorer Joel Piroe.
Despite such a successful campaign, the midfielder’s superb outing on the final day of the season may well be his last in a Burnley shirt, with his contract currently due to expire in the summer.
Scott Parker masterminded the division’s best ever defence this season, conceding just 16 times and keeping 30 clean sheets.
Known to be a manager who loves to be in control of all aspects surrounding the club, the 44-year-old seemed remarkably mystic when discussing Brownhill’s future following the Millwall victory.
“We'll probably just celebrate tonight with the team and we'll have some chats with Josh and see where his future lies,” explained the Clarets’ boss to the Burnley express.
“This game [against Millwall] probably epitomised Browny. We win 3-1, he scores two goals, scores the goal that gets us back in the game at 1-1…
“The biggest compliment I can also give to Browny is I think everyone sees Browny every time he walks on the football field in terms of the fans and you guys.
“But this is a guy that brings solid traits, he’s an unbelievable professional, he’s been a main driver of what we tried to create in the changing room.
"He's been a true leader and a captain of this group and has been a major part of why we've done what we’ve done. His goals represent that as well.”
It has since emerged though that both Everton and West Ham - two of Burnley's rivals for next season - are interested in signing Brownhill, as per Football Insider, and he likely won't be short of interest elsewhere due to his stunning form in-front of goal in 2024-25.
Now the season is over, Brownhill can focus on his future - but he may be in no hurry to make a decision just yet.
The 29-year-old is currently at the peak of his powers and has never enjoyed such high personal stock, meaning if there was a time to achieve a move to a more competitive club, it would be now.
However, there are a rare few Premier League outfits that the midfielder would enjoy such a leading role at in comparison to Burnley. This season, Brownhill has moulded himself into the Clarets’ key player, someone who can decide their fate upon matchday.
Decisive winners against the likes of Portsmouth, Plymouth Argyle, Norwich City and Watford have been worth their weight in gold, not to mention his heroic display to sink Sheffield United to the depths of the play-offs last month.
Speaking only a few weeks ago to the Burnley Express, Parker seemed certain that his captain would renew their deal at Turf Moor alongside centre back CJ Egan-Riley, saying: “Yeah, I'm confident.
“I know that both the players we're talking about here have absolutely loved this year and they've been vital cogs of what we've done.”
Time will tell whether Brownhill chooses to extend his five-year stay with the Clarets this summer, but one thing is for certain – the Burnley faithful will never forget the instrumental role he played in helping some achieve promotion back up to the top-flight during the 2024/25 Championship campaign.
If that is the end, what a way to go out.
