Burnley have reportedly seen a bid rejected for Salford City's highly-rated teenage attacker Kyrell Wilson

Burnley have made an unsuccessful bid for highly-rated Salford City teenager Kyrell Malcolm, with the Clarets looking to ensure their future for the long-term after gaining promotion to the Premier League under Scott Parker.

This news comes via a recent report from Football Insider transfer correspondent Pete O'Rourke, where Burnley's interest and unsuccessful offer for Malcolm has been revealed.

The Clarets will be intent on securing signings who can immediately make the step-up to the Premier League in a bid to bridge the gap between English football's top two tiers and buck the recent trend of newly-promoted sides suffering relegation straight back down again.

However, the bigger picture is also important and Burnley are keen on bringing players to Turf Moor capable of developing over time and eventually graduating into the first-team frame.

Burnley make unsuccessful bid for Salford City's Kyrell Malcolm

The aforementioned report does not detail how much Burnley's bid for Malcolm was worth or whether the Clarets could come knocking again with a revised approach, but what is clear is that the Ammies do not want to sell.

Salford are said to hold high hopes for Malcolm, who has already made nine first-team appearances for the League Two side after becoming the club's youngest-ever EFL debutant at the age of 16 during a fixture against Colchester United last year.

The 17-year-old attacker featured twice for Salford in the fourth-tier last season as they finished in eighth position under Karl Robinson, narrowly missing out on a play-off spot.

Malcolm appears to have a bright future ahead and has been tracked by Burnley academy manager Chris Casper.

Casper worked with Malcolm at Salford before he left for his current role with Burnley, and he has reportedly alerted the Clarets to the prospect.

Salford City's Kyrell Malcolm needs first-team experience amid Burnley interest

Any potential move to Turf Moor would surely see Malcolm link up with the club's under-21 side for at least a season, as Salford clearly do not feel he is ready for senior football at League Two level quite just yet.

Getting consistent exposure to the senior game has to be Malcolm's priority now. Whether more opportunities will be afforded at Salford next season remains to be seen, but if that's not the case, then a loan move could be an ideal avenue to explore.

It will be interesting to see how the forward fares in the years to come, as he's clearly an exciting talent with a big potential future in the game, but he has a long road ahead and needs to start tallying up consistent first-team minutes.
