Burnley manager Vincent Kompany has admitted that he believes that Ipswich Town possess the credentials needed to play in the Championship and gave his side a tougher test than many of the teams that they have faced at this level.

After the original FA Cup tie between the two sides ended in a stalemate, the Clarets eliminated their League One opponents from this competition last night in a replay at Turf Moor.

Burnley made the perfect start to this clash as Nathan Tella fired them ahead after just 46 seconds.

Undeterred by Tella’s strike, Ipswich responded immediately to this minor setback as they levelled proceedings via an effort from George Hirst.

Following the break, Kayden Jackson’s effort was saved by Burnley goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell.

With the game seemingly heading towards extra-time, Tella scored his second goal of the evening in stoppage-time to book the Clarets’ place in the fifth round of the FA Cup.

Burnley will host Fleetwood Town next month in this competition.

As for Ipswich, their attention will now switch to preparing for their crucial clash with Sheffield Wednesday this weekend.

A win for the Blues in this fixture will allow them to close the gap between them and the Owls in the third-tier standings to three points.

After his side’s meeting with Ipswich, Kompany issued an honest verdict on the League One outfit.

Speaking to the East Anglian Daily Times, Kompany said: “It was a tough game, which was expected because Ipswich are a good side and there’s not a lot of difference between Ipswich and some of the teams we face in the Championship.

“Therefore, I’m really pleased with the result.

“We have had a lot of opponents at Turf Moor and there aren’t many who have competed like they have, so I’d say they have the level.

“The rest, I suppose you will tell me League One is just as competitive as the Championship and it’s just as difficult to get out of.”

The Verdict

Kompany’s comments on Ipswich are a glowing reference as Burnley have set the Championship alight with their performances this season.

The Clarets have still yet to suffer a defeat at Turf Moor during the current campaign and are cruising towards an immediate return to the top-flight.

Ipswich will also be hoping to achieve promotion later this year under the guidance of Kieran McKenna.

Whereas the Blues have recently struggled with their consistency, they certainly have more than enough quality at their disposal to send out a real signal of intent this weekend to the rest of League One by ending Wednesday’s unbeaten run at this level.

By securing a morale-boosting victory over the Owls, Ipswich could use the confidence gained from this result to push on over the course of the coming weeks.
