Mainz claimed an important 2-0 victory against Heidenheim on Matchday 22, boosting their European aspirations while deepening Heidenheim's relegation worries.

This clash at the Voith-Arena was a tale of contrasting fortunes, with both teams desperate for points for very different reasons. Heidenheim, winless in the Rückrunde, were looking to climb out of the relegation zone, while Mainz aimed to continue their impressive form and push for European qualification. The return of Jonathan Burkardt to Mainz's starting lineup added an extra layer of intrigue to the encounter.

The home side started brightly, dominating possession and creating a couple of half-chances. Mathias Honsak came close for Heidenheim in the 25th minute, but his effort was well saved by Robin Zentner in the Mainz goal. However, it was Mainz who struck first in the 28th minute. A well-worked move saw Anthony Caci deliver a pinpoint cross from the right, which Burkardt expertly tucked away. The goal seemed to galvanise the visitors, who began to assert more control over the game. Heidenheim's frustration grew as the half wore on, with Zentner's clean sheet intact at the break.

Frank Schmidt responded to his team's first-half struggles by making a double substitution at the break, bringing on Marvin Pieringer and Paul Wanner. However, any hopes of a Heidenheim comeback were swiftly dashed just four minutes into the second half. Burkardt turned provider this time, setting up Nelson Weiper for a simple header to double Mainz's lead. Heidenheim tried to respond quickly, with Honsak forcing another good save from Zentner in the 53rd minute. Despite their continued possession, the home side struggled to create clear-cut chances against a well-organised Mainz defence.

As the match progressed, Mainz's game management came to the fore, with Bo Henriksen making strategic substitutions to maintain their control. Heidenheim continued to push, but the visitors' defence held firm. In the closing stages, Pieringer had Heidenheim's best chance to pull a goal back, but once again, Zentner was equal to the task, preserving his clean sheet and securing a comfortable 2-0 victory for Mainz.
Nebel delivered a masterclass in midfield, pulling the strings for Mainz throughout the match. His vision and passing were instrumental in creating chances for his team. Nebel's work rate was equally impressive, as he won the most challenges (10) for Mainz and was the most pressed player on the pitch, highlighting his importance to the team's play. His ability to retain possession under pressure and distribute the ball effectively was a key factor in Mainz's control of the game.
