Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw’s record-breaking campaign for Manchester City has been further recognised with the striker being voted as the 2024 Football Writers’ Association Women’s Footballer of the Year.

The 27-year-old overwhelmingly topped the prestigious poll, garnering 53 per cent of all votes cast.

It's the most votes for a women’s award in FWA history, as she overcame competition from City team-mate Alex Greenwood and Chelsea’s Lauren James.

Shaw becomes the second player from the Club to be awarded the prestigious prize, with former City striker Nikita Parris having won the award in 2019.

Jamaican international Shaw, who made the move to the Joie Stadium from Bordeaux in the summer of 2021, has enjoyed the finest season of her City career to date.

She has claimed a remarkable 21 goals from just 18 league appearances to help put Gareth Taylor’s side firmly in contention for what would be a first Women’s Super League title for the Club since 2016.

Though a foot injury means she will miss City’s final two games of the WSL campaign, Bunny still remains on course to claim the prestigious Golden Boot award presented to the league’s leading scorer.

Aside from her goals, Shaw’s talent, technique and prodigious work-rate have been one of the hallmarks of what has been a hugely impressive season for Taylor’s side.

And in accepting the award, as well as talking of her pride, Bunny was also quick to reference the help and support afforded to her by her City team-mates and backroom staff.

“I am very proud and privileged to have received this award and to be recognised in this way is a special honour,” Shaw said.

“I want to also thank all of my team-mates. They provide me with the chances to score goals and I could not have won this award without them.

“I also owe a lot to Gareth, the rest of the coaching team and everyone else here at City. It’s a pleasure to be part of such a special group.

“Many thanks to all who voted for me and to my fellow nominees. It means such a lot to have won this award.

“Hopefully the side can now finish off the season in style and give everyone special cause to celebrate.”

Since making the switch to the Joie Stadium from playing in France three years ago, Shaw has gone from strength to strength.

The forward’s debut season at the Club ended with 19 goals from 29 appearances, but our number 21 really came into her element the following campaign.

The Jamaican star finished the 2022/23 season with 31 strikes in all competitions, surpassing Nikita Parris’ record for the most goals scored across a single season by mid-March.

This season Bunny’s pace, power and precision have again see her provide a lethal cutting edge to City’s expansive play.

That red-hot scoring streak has continued apace, with Shaw also carving her name into City history during March’s WSL Manchester derby against United at the Etihad.

Bunny’s second half strike against our close rivals not only helped seal a memorable 3-1 win but also saw her become City’s all-time leading scorer as she overtook the tally of 67 set by former record holder Georgia Stanway.

Her total current City career haul now stands at 72 from 84 games – representing an incredible percentage of .85 goals per game.

Furthermore, in December 2023, Shaw also became the first player in WSL history to score three hat-tricks across a calendar year, with her overall tally of eight trebles in all competitions across her time at City also a record.

Now comes the prestigious FWA award.

Everyone at the Club congratulates Bunny on her special accolade.
