Barcelona cannot afford to spend big in the coming summer transfer window given their economic state. Departures will be key in the summer, and the club thus continue to eye free agents or players who can come in at a budget value.

The Catalans hope to be in an improved condition come 2024, and it is practical to expect any big moves to be made only next year. Thus, the name of Florian Wirtz has begun attracting serious attention at the club offices.

Earlier this week, it was reported that Barcelona had contacted the young playmaker’s entourage over a possible move in 2024.

As reported by Fabrizio Romano, however, the player denied the knowledge of such interest from the Spanish giants recently, although he did not rule out the possibility of such a move.

“I haven’t heard anything from my dad about Barcelona. I want to do well with Leverkusen. I’m not looking to the future.”

The German protege is contracted with Bayer Leverkusen until the summer of 2027 and has a host of clubs lined up for his signing. With the Bundesliga outfit unwilling to part ways with him this summer at any cost, he is likely to take the next step in his career only after another season. This, thankfully, plays into Barcelona’s hands.

The young midfielder scored seven goals and provided ten assists in 24 league appearances last season. He devastatingly missed 31 games over 265 days for Bayer Leverkusen after a cruciate ligament rupture at the end of last season.

Wirtz is now back and running with five assists and two goals in his last nine games. Needless to say, a move to the European elite is not far off.
