Borussia Dortmund face Freiburg as they look to continue their winning start to the year and close the gap to first, which Freiburg will also want to do as both teams sit three points off of first.

Last weekend, Dortmund beat Bayer Leverkusen 2-0 with Karim Adeyemi scoring his first goal for Dortmund since his move from RB Salzburg. Edmund Tapsoba scored an own goal which secured the win for Dortmund. In this game, Leverkusen were a lot stronger attacking-wise, resulting in Dortmund relying on Gregor Kobel to save them several times. Sébastien Haller also made his first start for Dortmund and could of potentially had his first goal if it was not for Tapsoba scoring instead.

Freiburg also won last weekend beating relegation-threatened Augsburg 3-1. They took the lead through Michael Gregoritsch in the 13th minute. Mergim Berisha would then equalise for Augsburg but immediately from kickoff, Freiburg retook the lead through Lucas Höler. In the 85th minute, Philipp Lienhart secured the win. This was Freiburg’s first win of the year as they lost 6-0 to Wolfsburg in the first game back before drawing 1-1 with Eintracht Frankfurt the game after.

The questions surrounding Dortmund going into this game will be how does their attack start to play together now that Haller is likely to start and the likes of Adeyemi have started to look more comfortable in the team. There is also the likes of Giovanni Reyna who was crucial in Dortmund’s wins against Augsburg and Mainz. Jamie Bynoe-Gittens also returned and has shown the quality he possesses and why he could also start for Dortmund.

But the likes of Youssoufa Moukoko has struggled since the return of the Bundesliga and Donyell Malen hasn’t looked the part for the majority of the season.

Freiburg will be wanting to regain the consistency they lost over the World Cup break and with the top five being so close together in terms of points a win can easily take Freiburg level on points with first-placed Bayern Munich.

In the game earlier on in the season between the two saw Dortmund come from behind to win it late. Gregoritsch took the lead for Freiburg before Dortmund required quick-fire Moukoko and Jamie Bynoe-Gittens goals to give Dortmund the lead before Marius Wolf scored the third.
