Dani Olmo (RB Leipzig)

Timo Werner may be gone but RB Leipzig are top of the Bundesliga; they’re one of just three unbeaten teams; and Dani Olmo is starting to shine.

The Spanish international joined the club halfway through last season but it’s only now that he’s showing what he’s truly capable of.

In Werner’s absence, Lepizig have started their last two games without a striker, instead using Emil Forsberg to lead the line with Olmo playing a free role just behind him. And the Spaniard excelled in Augsburg on Saturday.

Floating across the field with all the grace of an offensive midfielder schooled at La Masia, Olmo’s sharp movement and quick feet made him a threat throughout against a stubborn Augsburg backline.

The Fuggerstädter kept Dortmund at bay just a few weeks ago but Olmo’s creativity made the difference during a cagey first half. After fashioning the game’s first chance for himself, only to  be  denied by Rafal Gikiewicz, it was a moment of brilliance that saw Leipzig take the lead.

Olmo was surrounded as the ball fell to him on the edge of the box, but quick feet and a burst of speed to match saw him breeze away from three defenders before a perfect chipped cross found Angeliño, the smallest man on the pitch, at the back post to nod in the opener.

That amount of finesse was lacking in his second assist for Yussuf Poulsen’s spectacular volley. You could even say Olmo’s neat pass was overhit and left Poulsen with too much to do but it encapsulated the 22-year-old’s quick thinking.

When it comes to the final third and breaking teams down, you have to be sharp, you have to move the ball quickly, you have to do the unexpected. Olmo ticks all those boxes over and over again.

Never ponderous, always a step ahead. Olmo is threatening to have a spectacular season.
