A busy Bundesliga weekend saw 33 goals scored across nine games, so there was plenty to talk about, even if Sundayâs affairs were drab.
Needless to say, our Bundesliga Player of the Week doesnât come from Sunday. Congratulations to âŠ
A complete midfielder, Florian Neuhaus is crucial for club and becoming important for his country as well.
The 23-year-old Germanâs presence is growing as this Gladbach team continues to prove its strength. No Gladbach midfielder made as many passes in the 4-1 defeat of Schalke on Saturday and no player on the pitch won as many tackles.
âHeâs been playing at a very, very high level for months now. Heâs played for the national team and made his mark there too,â boss Marco Rose said after the game, but insisted there is room for improvement.
âItâs true he was dominant today but he was also a part of our sloppy opening half an hour. Flo was a bit erratic and lost the ball a couple of times.â
It says something about Neuhausâs ability that he put that opening behind him to truly take control of the game and the opening goal was so much of what Neuhaus is good at.
The midfielder, smartly positioned, pounced on a loose ball and quickly got his head up to fire a pass ahead of Marcus Thuram. He wanted it returned to him on the edge of the box as Thuram advanced but the Frenchman looked for Alassane Pléa instead.
When PlĂ©aâs shot was saved, the ball fell to Neuhaus, who had continued his run and slid the ball home. He didnât stop to admire his pass to set up the attack, he didnât get annoyed when the ball wasnât laid back to him. He was alert without the ball, then with it, to put his side ahead.
Schalke soon equalised but Neuhaus wrestled the game back into his sideâs hands. A smart pass, this time with his left foot, found Thuram again, and this time the Frenchman did return it.
Driving forward with his head up, Neuhaus slid the ball perfectly into Oscar Wendtâs path and the left-back restored the lead.
The midfielder nearly added another, with a finely struck long-range effort that was bound for the top corner before it was tipped over the bar, but Gladbach didnât need it as they eased to a 4-1 win.
Performances like this wonât just be huge for Neuhaus and Gladbach, they also underline the midfielderâs future as a crucial player for the German national team.
