“I feel like he always has his best games against us.”

A compliment, sure, but one that couldn’t be said through more gritted teeth. Joshua Kimmich had no choice but to acknowledge Yann Sommer’s record performance in Munich on Sunday but he obviously wasn’t too happy about it.

And who would be? Having won each of their opening three matches, Bayern Munich dominated Borussia Mönchengladbach, so often their bogey team, but the visitors still left the Allianz Arena with a point.

One that belongs to their goalkeeper.

Since detailed data collection begun, back at the start of the 2004/05 season, the most saves recorded in a Bundesliga match was Alexander Schwolow’s 14 against Bayern back in January. Sommer made 19 on Saturday. He didn’t break a record, he annihilated one.

The onslaught started early, with Sommer tipping over from a corner. It was an impressive start from the Swiss but the best was yet to come.

Over the course of the 90 minutes, 11 Bayern players had shots, with 10 of them hitting the target and Sommer denying all 10 at least once.

Sadio Mané alone had four shots on target, including a pair that forced a brilliant double save, both with the feet, from the Swiss within a matter of seconds.

There was a one-on-one against Leroy Sané. A smothered Thomas Müller header. Shots from range hit with power by Alphonso Davies, Matthijs de Ligt, and Benjamin Pavard.

None of them were good enough.

“It was tough today, really hard,” Sommer said after his record-breaking performance.

“We know how much power and pressure Bayern exert, and that the defence can’t keep everything out, so I’m happy I had such a good game.

“I actually prefer it when I have less to do! But when I can help us get a 1-1 in Munich with these saves, then obviously that pleases me.”

Modest as they come but the highest of praise came from team-mate Joe Scally, who went one further than the “world-class performance” shout made by coach Daniel Farke.

“He’s the best in the world,” Scally said. “He does this every single week. Last year in our first game against Bayern he did this as well.

“Every game we just expect it from him because we know he’s the best goalie. He gives the defence so much confidence, he gives the team confidence because we know that if something happens then he’s there to save us. He’s just unbelievable.”
