After joining Mainz when he was 14 years old, Jonathan Burkardt’s senior career is finally starting to make some headlines.

Just over a week ago, Burkardt came off the bench to ignite Mainz’s comeback against Borussia Dortmund after making things 2-1 late in the game before Erling Haaland sealed the win for the hosts.

However, the 21-year-old German international’s run of good form then continued into Friday’s match.

His influence against Dortmund prompted Bo Svensson to name Burkardt in the starting line up and boy, did he reward his manager for the decision.

Against Augsburg over the weekend, Burkardt scored a brace and recorded an assist in the team’s 4-1 win.

Placed alongside his fellow centre forward Karim Onisiwo on the pitch, the two combined for three goals and three assists. Talk about a lethal duo up top.

And if that wasn’t enough, Burkardt was marking his 50th Bundesliga appearance on the night making the event an even more celebratory occasion.

He is now the club’s leading goalscorer finding the net four times in nine Bundesliga games this season and scored in consecutive matches for the first time.

As captain of Germany’s U-21 team, it won’t be long until Burkardt finds himself with the senior team if he can keep performing as he has. In fact, Hansi Flick was in attendance against Augsburg.

The only way is up for this talent.
