The DFL have announced that Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga clubs have “unanimously” agreed to suspend play until the start of May at the earliest.
All 36 Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga clubs were involved in a conference call on Tuesday and agreed with the DFL’s recommendation to not resume play before 30 April.
However, there is still an eagerness to get back to action as soon as possible despite the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
Speaking to the media on Tuesday, DFL president Christian Seifert stressed the need to restart play as the suspension of games and broadcasting funds has left a number of clubs in danger.
“Some clubs could in May, others in June, face a situation where their existence is in danger if we don’t complete the season.
“The loss of revenue from ticket sales has to be factored in until the end of the season at least. Possibly even until the end of the year.
“The aim is (still) to complete the season by the end of June.”
According to Kicker, the situation could see a return to action in early May in empty stadiums.
Things, unfortunately, aren’t so straightforward. Many questions, such as whether seriously injured players could be treated in already full hospitals or how competition would continue if a player of coach contracted the cornavirus, need to be considered.
