It was an eventful afternoon in the Bundesliga that provided many storylines. Here is your Bundesliga matchday 22 round-up from all the Saturday afternoon fixtures.
Borussia Dortmund were swept away by an impressive Bochum performance who continue their great escape. Bochum were the better of the two teams in the first half and finally made the breakthrough when Giorgos Masouras tapped home a shot/cross from Philipp Hoffman. Less than two minutes later, the Greek international has his and Bochum’s second of the day. Niklas Süle, who hasn’t started in over two-and-a-half months, tried to play the ball back to Kobel but didn’t put enough on the pass. Masouras intercepted and chipped the oncoming Kobel. The second half saw more BVB pressure with little success. The win for Bochum puts them on 14 points and 17th. Dortmund’s European hopes are fading week-by-week and are stay in 11th.
Gladbach continue their march up the table following an impressive victory over Union Berlin. The visitors got off to an electric start despite the snowy conditions in the capital. Left-back Lukas Ullrich got his first Bundesliga goal with a tidy finish 11 minutes in. Timo Kleindienst then doubled Gladbach’s lead with the easiest of tap-ins just before the 30-minute mark. Union made more of a game of it in the second half and got a goal back from the spot – Andrej Ilic with his first for the club. The win means Gladbach are 7th, just 3 points off 4th. Union stay 14th on 24 points.
Wolfsburg came from 1-0 down to earn an impressive win 1-2 on the road against VfB Stuttgart. The home side took the lead after an outstanding solo run from Nick Woltemade. However, the Wolves pulled one back almost immediately through Tiago Tomas. The Wolves secured all three points on the 87th minute from the penalty spot. Mohamed Amoura converted from eleven metres. The win lifts Wolves into 8th on 33 pints, two points off Stuttgart who are now in 6th spot.
Freiburg are now up into 5th spot with a slender 0-1 win over St. Pauli. As always, it was a game of few chances in Hamburg. Freiburg did have a penalty late in the first half, however, the panenka attempt from Vincenzo Grifo went straight into the hands of the goalkeeper. Frebirg finally made the breakthrough late on in the 88th minute, through a Philipp Treu own goal. That’s three 1-0 wins on the spin now for Freiburg as they continue to move up the table and aim for Europe. St. Pauli remains in 14th on 21 points.
