The Bundesliga has typically been open to embracing technology.

That’s why it’s not a surprise to see that next week, the league will broadcast a match live on Facebook for the first time.

The DFL announced on Friday that a stream will be provided by ELEVEN SPORTS for viewers in Poland and will feature the match between Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich, which takes place on January 12.

It is just the latest sign suggesting that football broadcasting is shifting from traditional television networks to internet giants like Facebook, Twitter, Amazon and possibly even Netflix.

“For Bundesliga as an innovation leader in the field of sports, digitalization plays a key role,” Robert Klein, the CEO of Bundesliga International GmbH told the DFL website.

“Our digital platforms and social media channels are providing us with new, effective tools that we are using to distribute the Bundesliga’s high appeal in the global market via inspiring content.”

In other words, it won’t be too long before you’re watching your favourite Bundesliga teams live on social media rather than on your TV.
