Since the arrival of Klopp in 2015 and the club’s subsequent prosperous state, Liverpool have been a top attraction to some of the most talented and promising players across Europe. The latest in line is Wout Weghorst, the VfL Wolfsburg forward, who has now stated that he dreams of playing for the Reds someday.

Speaking to Goal and DAZN, the striker said, “I always found Liverpool very special. I still get goosebumps from ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’. There are other great English clubs too, and I always liked Milan because Weghorst so many Dutch played there.

“I am ambitious and want to get ahead. Maybe at some point play at another club, whether in Germany or in England? But at the moment it is still far away. I feel good and try to achieve the maximum here.”

Who is Wout Weghorst?

The Dutch player started his career at FC Emmen, where he plied his trade for two years. From there he moved to Heracles Almelo and after that to AZ. In AZ, Weghorst impressed everyone with his performances, and ultimately that earned him a move to VfL Wolfsburg in 2018. The Netherlands international has shown some wonderful displays for the Bundesliga side, netting 28 league goals in 58 matches. His accomplishments on the field have also made Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman take notice of him and provide him with an opportunity to wear the national colours.

What could he bring to Anfield?

So far, the Reds have publicly not shown any interest in him, but if Weghorst is brought in to play for the English club, it could be quite a decent signing for the German manager. The first thing that one would notice in the forward is his height.

Standing at 1.97 metres, Weghorst is a massive physical presence at the attacking end and in a league as physically dominating as the Premier League, this would be of great help to the Reds. The Dutchman is an ideal poacher with decent finishing ability. In Bundesliga, Weghorst is used as a target-man by his club for his aerial prowess.

Would he suit the style of Klopp?

Jurgen Klopp is known for an attacking brand of football, renowned for its fluidity. The dynamism that the players have shown in the recent years on the pitch has been the primary reason behind the club’s success, and the whole transfer policy of the club is revolved around the same philosophy. Weghorst, with his massive stature, is not exactly known for the pressing game and that may be an obstacle for him to be inducted into the Merseyside club.

The front three of Liverpool, Salah, Mane and Firmino are all experts in one-two passes, overlapping runs, and a quick turn to beat the opposition defenders. In this system, it would be hard for the gaffer to introduce someone like Weghorst. Therefore, it is advisable both for the player and the club to admire each other from a distance and look at other alternatives while conducting business.
