Germany World Cup winner Christoph Kramer has been unable to find a new club since leaving Borussia Mönchengladbach as a free agent last summer.

In a recent podcast, the 33-year-old expressed his surprise at not having found a new employer, despite agreeing to take a big pay cut.

Now, speculation has emerged that he could return to the Bundesliga, with relegation-threatened Bochum looking to strengthen their squad in January.

Kramer is no stranger to Bochum, having spent time there on loan in the past. And the fact that he played under current Bochum boss Dieter Hecking at Borussia Mönchengladbach only adds to the speculation.

"He was a player for Dieter Hecking. They had a very good relationship. It would therefore be a particularly good fit," VfL Bochum CEO Ilja Kaenzig told Bild TV.

He made it clear that no talks have been held with Kramer at this stage, but that something will have to happen in January.

“The team needs something in one, two, maybe three positions. I would be prepared to do crazy things. Whether we're talking about ‘Chris’ Kramer or someone else, we're not going to save the club with ordinary solutions.”

Bochum are bottom of the Bundesliga table with three points from 14 games.
