Bulinews Player of the Season Awards: Bayern Munich's Player of the Season

Finally, the champions. Die Rekordmeister are back on their perch. Questions were asked of head coach Vincent Kompany before a ball was kicked. The Belgian hardly had a glittering managerial career aside from a Championship title with Burnley, but he proved he was the man for the job in no time. The Bavarian giants assumed control of first place from Matchday 3 onwards to open a 13-point winning margin and hoist the Meisterschale aloft.

This honour could fall to several players but in his first season in Bavaria nobody seems more deserving of the title than Michael Olise. The French winger arrived from Crystal Palace for €60million and delivered instantly. Not least his mesmerising dribbling, knack of creating chances and finishing like a forward; Olise even shattered records like becoming Bayern’s second-ever player to score and assist in four consecutive games since Mario Mandzukic in 2004-05.

The 23-year-old was unplayable at times for opposition defenders, particularly nearing the season’s end as he led the charge for an injury-hit Bavarian side destined for Bundesliga glory. Featuring in all 34 of Bayern’s domestic games, the French international amassed 12 goals and 15 assists in a simply blistering first season for a resurgent Rekordmeister.

STANDOUT PERFORMANCE:

Michael Olise was simply untouchable on Matchday 4 when Bayern Munich ripped Werder Bremen to shreds in a 5-0 rout. The right winger opened the visitors’ account on 23 minutes as he drifted into the box to poke Harry Kane’s pass beyond Zetterer. Just past the half-hour, Olise’s twinkling feet led the Bremen defence on a merry dance until he unselfishly cut the ball back to Musiala with the goal at his mercy.

After the break, Bayern’s €60million man returned the favour to his teammate Kane. A snappy pass into the English striker’s feet enabled him to finish low into the right corner. Olise made sure of his brace on the hour as Gnabry’s back-heel afforded space to clip the ball inside the left upright. Gnabry added a fifth on what was an Olise-inspired five-star display from the then champions to be.

HONOURABLE MENTIONS:

I think it’s only fair that the league’s top-scorer Harry Kane gets a shout out for his 26 goals, however Joshua Kimmich picked up the only remaining vote from our writers’ panel. The Bavarian’s captain led by example all season while firing home 3 goals alongside his 6 assists in 33 outings. Kimmich’s 309.4km also clocked in as the second-highest distance covered with the fourth-best pass accuracy (92.9%) across Germany’s first division.
