Bristol City had a fairly underwhelming season in the Championship, and if it was not for Andreas Weimann’s inspired form and points deductions they may have experienced some relegation nerves.

An exciting crop of younger players breaking into the first team at Bristol City gave supporters some optimism that the Robins could return to new heights under Nigel Pearson, but those hopes may not be as strong after this summer window.

Han-Noah Massengo only has one year remaining on his contract at Ashton Gate, and in terms of asset management, the sensible decision would be to offload him rather than allowing him to depart for a reduced fee at the end of next season.

FLW writer Ben Wignall offered his thoughts on Massengo’s credentials, having been linked with a move to Leicester City and Southampton by Football Insider, when he appeared on this afternoon’s EFL Transfer Zone on FLW TV.

He said: “If Massengo doesn’t sign a new contract then I think Bristol City will have to cash in on him.

“He’s been inconsistent since he’s arrived at the club, but you can accept that considering how young he is, he’s got a lot of responsibility in that team, especially this past season.

“It’s not a surprise to see bigger clubs interested.

“He has the potential to be a £20-30 million midfielder in my mind, I think money is pretty tight at Bristol City, they’re operating on a bit of a shoestring transfer budget at the minute, and if they do have to cash in on Massengo, I don’t think it’ll be the end of the world.

“But, obviously they’ll want to keep him and build the team around him and Alex Scott.”

Massengo has shown his class in patches over the course of this season, and could make the step up to be a credible long term replacement for Youri Tielemans at the King Power Stadium in the coming years.

It would be an enormous statement of intent if the Robins were able to persuade him to sign a new deal.
