Bruno Guimaraes sold? What would be the reaction…?

What will be the reaction if Newcastle United sell Bruno Guimaraes?

I have been prompted to ask the question after a couple of transfer ‘exclusives’ that have broken these past 24 hours.

OneFootball Videos

The first one on Saturday claimed (see HERE) that Elliot Anderson had been offered plus cash to Wolves, in order for Eddie Howe to try and land central defender Max Kilman.

Then following that, Yankuba Minteh’s agent quoted (see HERE) and saying that Newcastle United are willing to sell the 19 year old if getting an acceptable offer and that indeed, stating that the teenager has already agreed personal terms with one (unnamed) club and it was down to NUFC now whether they will sell Minteh.

Before I go any further, let me take you back 17 days and this report…

‘As many as six Premier League clubs face having to sell players before the end of June in order to comply with the division’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

That date is the cut-off point for the financial year across the top flight, where clubs must show they have made losses of no more than £105m over the last three years – or less if they have spent some of that time outside the top flight.

Chelsea, Aston Villa, Newcastle, Everton, Nottingham Forest and Leicester are all under the pressure of losing a key asset or two, Sky Sports News understands, before the change over into the new financial year.’

The likes of the usually very reliable Athletic have also reported that Newcastle United need to bring in some cash before the end of this month, to ensure they don’t break PSR (Profit and Sustainability Rules). Along with other credible media though, they don’t see this as a massive issue, in terms of it won’t seriously affect Newcastle United still bringing in a healthy amount of incoming business this transfer window. More a case of two separate deadlines, the end of June 2024 by which time Newcastle United need to balance the books for the three year period that ends then – to stay within PSR. Before then 1 July onwards, when in the next two months Newcastle United can bring in their transfer targets, including the Lloyd Kelly and Lewis Hall deals that are already sorted, plus of course potentially sell other players as well to help make space and be financially able to bring those incoming targets in.

So anyway, back to my Bruno Guimaraes question.

If he was sold by Newcastle United, what would be the reaction from fans? As a fanbase I’m pretty sure we’d be devastated, however, with the reaction to these Anderson and Minteh stories the past 24 hours, I am wondering just how extreme the reaction would be if Bruno Guimaraes did actually leave???

For what it’s worth, I don’t think any chance of Bruno Guimaraes moving this summer. Even if he has a week still to go of his £100m release clause remaining live.

With Anderson and Minteh, I have found the reaction astonishing from many Newcastle United fans to what has been in the media this weekend.

None of us have any idea of what is the actual truth, exactly what Newcastle’s position is with PSR, whether they do indeed need to sell one or more players by the end of the month, nor exactly which players they would and wouldn’t be prepared to sell.

Let us just say for a moment that these Minteh and Anderson stories are true, then answer the hypothetical question(s) of what the appropriate reaction would be is one or both did leave this month/window?

What would yours be?

Well, from what I am seeing/hearing, it would feel like the end of the world for some Newcastle United fans.

So again, how would they react if it was Bruno Guimaraes???

Elliot Anderson will turn 22 in November, has started 13 Premier League games for Newcastle United and is still yet to score his first goal for the club.

Yankuba Minteh turns 20 in July and as yet hasn’t played a minute of football for Newcastle United.

Now I like Elliot Anderson and think he has great potential, whilst with Yankuba Minteh I think clearly he has progressed on loan at Feyenoord, I have seen clips of his goals and he also has great potential.

However, if I was listing all of the current Newcastle United players and went from the one I would hate to lose the most, then all the way down, where exactly would Minteh and Anderson be placed?

For me, you have Bruno Guimaraes, Isak and Gordon at the very top, the elite trio, then I have the likes of Joelinton, Botman, Pope, Tonali, Hall, Willock, Livramento and so on. Simple fact for me is that Minteh and Anderson aren’t even close to top ten in terms of key players at Newcastle United.

That of course may well change in years to come at Newcastle United if they do indeed stay on, however, we are talking about the here and now.

As things stand, we have no idea whether Minteh could hack it in the Premier League, nor anything for sure that Anderson can kick on from the promise he has shown in a very small number of games.

So if you then accept that the current position is that Newcastle United may need to bring in cash by the end of June, plus Eddie Howe may need to sell certain players to help him bring in his own targets, well something has to give.

Look at Aston Villa, they finish fourth and are set to play Champions League football, yet they are having to sell Douglas Luiz, one of their very best players, this month in order to keep within PSR. The Brazil international set to join Juventus.

Again, imagine if this was Newcastle United and Bruno Guimaraes!

Judging by the hysterics from some Newcastle fans in reaction to possible Anderson and/or Minteh departures, if Bruno left NUFC this summer I think the club would need to employ numerous counsellors to help supporters deal with it.

We have to deal with whatever the financial realities are AND we have to deal with the fact that players in the Newcastle United squad who we like, may move on in any transfer window in order that Eddie Howe can make the team/squad even better. Eddie Howe himself said he ideally hadn’t wanted to sell ASM, however, if that then leads to the likes of Anthony Gordon coming in, then more than fine by me.
