Bruno Guimaraes pulls off the near impossible

Bruno Guimaraes found himself in the thick of the action on Saturday.

As usual.

The Newcastle United star with an all action display and a superb performance topped off by a quite astonishing assist for Alexander Isak to make it 3-0. A superb ball from deep that released the striker to run from just inside his own half and effectively kill off any faint hopes Spurs might have had after the break.

A similar long ball from deep had picked out Anthony Gordon earlier, putting Newcastle 2 v 2 with Spurs defenders. Gordon then measuring his assist perfectly for Isak to expertly finish for the first goal.

So, near impossible passes from Bruno Guimaraes, but surely this is even more incredible from the Brazil international…

On 13 January 2024, Bruno Guimaraes was booked against Man City in the 3-2 Premier League home defeat.

This was a sixth Newcastle match in a row, in all competitions, in which the midfielder had been yellow carded.

More importantly, that ninth PL yellow card over three months ago in the 21st Premier League match of the season, meant he had to complete a further nine PL matches without a booking, or else get a two game  suspension for 10 bookings in the opening 32 PL games of the season.

Fourteen matches played now for Bruno Guimaraes since that Man City match, eleven of those games in the Premier League, not a single booking in them for Bruno!!!

What a turn around for someone who had picked up 14 yellow cards in all competitions this season, up to and including that Man City match 92 days ago now.

This is now the 2023/24 Premier League leaderboard for Newcastle United players and yellow cards, following that Tottenham match:

9 Bruno Guimaraes

8 Gordon

6 Longstaff

5 Joelinton, Trippier, Schar

4 Lascelles

3 Burn

2 Tonali, Wilson, Botman

1 Barnes, Targett, Ritchie, Livramento, Almiron, Hall, Miley, Dubravka, White, Isak, Murphy

Bruno did get a yellow card last month BUT that was for Brazil in their 3-3 draw with Spain.

So, with now 32 Premier League matches gone, Bruno has to avoided a two game suspension after not reaching the 10 bookings.

However, he has to build on this and try to keep that balance of retaining his competitive edge but not giving daft and/or reckless yellows away in the future. Anthony Gordon the same,

At one time it looked like both Gordon and Bruno could have been in danger of reaching 15 yellows in this PL season, which would then bring a further three game ban. However, things have relatively calmed down for the squad overall as well, after 36 yellow cards in the opening 13 NUFC Premier League matches. With 25 yellows (this doesn’t include the two for Gordon against West Ham as they got him a red card and one game suspension) for NUFC players  in these next most recent 19 PL games.
