According to L’Équipe, before his departure, Bruno Génésio wanted to appoint Samir Nasri as his assistant manager at Rennes. During a summer transfer window with a heavy recruitment drive, the former Lyon manager wanted to add the former Manchester City and Arsenal winger to his backroom staff.

Despite the desire to bring the former France international into his backroom, no offer of a coaching role for Nasri materialised. The reports come as a surprise considering the former West Ham attacking midfielder has no apparent coaching experience. Things have transpired quickly for Génésio since the summer transfer window with him now leaving his role at the helm of Roazhon Park.

Rennes have struggled in Ligue 1 thus far this season. Les Rouge et Noirs currently sit in thirteenth place in Ligue 1. Pressure ramped up on the former Rennes manager following a 1-0 defeat to bottom-of-the-table Lyon before the international break. The Frenchman has now left his role following a mutual agreement with the club.

Former Rennes manager Julien Stéphan has now been confirmed as Génésio’s successor at Roazhon Park. The former Strasbourg head coach has signed an eight-month contract which will keep him in charge until the end of the season. Stéphan has been unemployed since he was sacked by the Racing Club in January 2023.
