Manchester United’s season has been nothing short of a long-running nightmare which can be salvaged a little with a victory in the FA Cup final.

However, even in a season of despair, there have been some shining lights like the academy youngsters breaking through.

Still, the one constant amidst all the drama and failure has been the consistent displays of captain Bruno Fernandes.

The club have announced that Fernandes has been awarded the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award for his exploits in the 2023/24 season.

The award is given by the fans to the player they think contributed the most in the season.

This is Fernandes’ third such award, with him winning it consecutively in 2019/20 and 2020/21 as well.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Marcus Rashford won the last two awards but the captain has come back to win it this time on the back of carrying an anemic attack to some relevancy.

Despite United having their lowest-ever league finish and finishing the league campaign with a goal difference of -1, Fernandes played a part in 18 goals in the league (ten goals and eight assists).

United scored only 57 goals the whole season so he was directly responsible for about one-third of the club’s output.

In all competitions, he finished with 15 goals and 12 assists and was the clear heart of everything creative that United managed to do.

Such was his commitment to the cause, that he was playing with a broken hand when players around him were falling.

He had to ultimately miss games due to his own issues as well, for the first time in his career, a remarkable feat that puts into perspective his importance to the team.

With this award, Bruno now moves into second place in the all-time winners list, behind just David de Gea and Cristiano Ronaldo, both with four wins.

He would just want to add some team silverware now to his personal tally, with the FA Cup final providing his next chance.
