Bruno Fernandes created history for the Portuguese national team following their impressive 6-1 win over Switzerland in the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup.

Fernandes was vital for Portugal in the win, as Goncalo Ramos grabbed a hat-trick and Joao Felix also impressed, as Cristiano Ronaldo was on the bench. But Portugal didn’t miss the veteran, as they ran the Swiss ragged and put in a dominating performance on the pitch.

The Manchester United midfielder now has two goals and three assists in the tournament, with Opta now claiming that his tally of five goal contributions is the highest by a Portuguese player since the 1966 edition of the tournament. Back then, Eusebio had racked up ten goal contributions, with Jose Torres chipping in with six.

Fernandes didn’t score today but he impressed with his ability to set up others and his technical ability in the final third helped Portugal operate smoothly between the lines.
