Bruno Fernandes has explained why he isn’t the designated set-piece taker for Portugal, despite often being in charge of all dead balls at club level. The 26-year-old boasts a near flawless record from the penalty spot but has revealed why he shares responsibilities for his national side.

Cristiano Ronaldo, who recently became the top scorer in European Championship history, is the designated penalty and free-kick taker close to goal.

Manchester United’s midfield supremo has explained he doesn’t mind sharing responsibilities with his teammates, insisting that whatever’s best for the team is first priority.

“I already did take one [free-kick],” Fernandes is quoted as saying by ManUtd.com “I’m already doing it, but it’s not necessarily my focus here. We have many players who can take them in their clubs and here. It’s not important who takes it.

“The only important thing here is to help the team whatever way I can do that and, if I can help them with the goals inside or outside of the penalty box, I will be happy. Our goal is to help the national team to win and I’m no exception.”

Fernandes is expected to play a key role for Portugal as they try to defend their European crown, having won the tournament in surprising fashion in 2016.

The ‘Selecao’ took home Europe’s elite prize despite only winning one game in normal time. After three draws in the group stage, only in the semi-final against Wales did they manage to win inside the distance.
