Bruno Fernandes is one of the biggest talking points of this winter’s World Cup so far, with the United talisman impressing so far in Qatar.

The 28-year-old has nailed down a position under Fernando Santos and was at the forefront of their group stage domination, with the statistical website WhoScored naming him as the player of the group stage.

Fernandes’ stellar form comes after Erik ten Hag handed him a different role at United, with focus now being more on ball retention and breaking the opposition down.

Previously, he had been United’s only source of goals and assists, particularly under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the 2020/21 season, when United finished second.

He’s back at his brilliant best in front of goal for Portugal, however. Thus far, Fernandes has been directly involved in five goals in three appearances in Qatar. That means that he has equaled a 56-year-old record for the European giants.

That’s according to OptaJoe, who claim that Fernandes’ tally of five involvements is the most of any Portuguese player in the World Cup since 1966 when Jose Torres and Eusebio both reached that feat.

Fernandes still has time to add more goals and assists, with Portugal currently impressing. They will face Morocco in the quarter-finals later this week.
