Manchester United beat Manchester City 2-1 at Wembley to lift the FA Cup final on Saturday.

First-half goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo were ultimately enough to secure the victory for United and help the club clinch silverware during a very tumultuous and disappointing season.

United had just 26% possession compared to City’s larger 76% share of the ball.

Erik ten Hag’s men managed five shots on target from their total 11 cracks at goal. In comparison, the reigning Premier League champions attempted 19 shots but only four of these required Andre Onana to swing into action.

The Red Devils put together 248 passes with a completion rate of 76%.

In comparison, City strung 664 passes with a pass accuracy of 90%.

One of United’s most outstanding performers was their captain, Bruno Fernandes. He was excellent in midfield and most of the good things the team did – especially in attack – came from him.

Fernandes had two shots to his name. One was on-target while the other didn’t find its mark.

He embarked on three dribbles and completed all of them. In total, the Portugal international had 52 touches of the ball. He successfully found his teammates with 20 of the 30 passes he attempted, mustering an individual pass accuracy of 67%. Five of his passes were key passes.

The United skipper tried to find his intended target with one cross and six long balls. He connected with the one cross he put in and just one long ball he pinged.

Fernandes delved into 11 ground duels and won eight of them. He also came out on top in one of the two aerial challenges he contested.

To further highlight how immense he was defensively, the playmaker made two interceptions and won five tackles.

A day before the FA Cup final, Fernandes penned an open letter to United fans and promised them that he and his teammates would do everything in their power to beat City.

He certainly fulfilled his vow in stunning fashion.
