Manchester United have shelved contract talks with Bruno Fernandes until the end of the season, with the midfielder seeking parity with the club’s leading earners.

Fernandes has held talks over a new contract as the Red Devils look to reward his contribution since arriving from Sporting Lisbon, with the Portugal international having emerged as one of the Premier League’s most productive players at Old Trafford.

The 27-year-old has provided 55 goal involvements in just 70 league appearances and the club’s board are keen to hand Fernandes a new deal that reflects his status in the squad.

Fernandes is believed to have turned down an offer during previous negotiations, with The Athletic reporting that talks have now been shelved until the end of the current season.

Fernandes signed on a comparatively modest deal worth around £100,000-a-week following his arrival from Portugal, a figure well below the salaries commanded by the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo (£400-a-week) and David de Gea (£375,000-a-week).

With the likes of Paul Pogba, Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial all earning at least double Fernandes’ wage, he is keen to ensure his squad status is reflected in a new deal that moves him closer to the club’s highest earners.

Talks are expected to resume at the end of the season and United remain ‘relaxed’ about the situation, with Fernandes contracted to the club until 2025.
