Manchester United suffered their first Premier League defeat of the season yesterday as Aston Villa left Old Trafford with all three points after a dramatic ending to the game.

Kortney Hause gave the visitors the lead in the 88th minute but the centre-back conceded a penalty just minutes after, a spot-kick Bruno Fernandes subsequently missed in the dying embers of the match.

The 27-year-old midfielder has been near-flawless from 12 yards prior to that penalty but was left with his head in his hands after seeing it sky over the crossbar. Fernandes reacted to the mishap on social media after the game, insisting there is no time for excuses.

“No excuses for my penalty miss today,” he wrote on Twitter, as seen above. “I’m my biggest critic but as always I’ll use it to drive me forward. More than my disappointment though, the team’s loss today is the most important. I’ll be ready next time,” he added before embedding a long, emotional message to his supporters.

Fernandes remains as one of the fan-favourites at Manchester United and although the defeat to Aston Villa will be hard to stomach for many, their love for their midfield maestro is unlikely to wain.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his side have the chance to bounce back from the surprising loss in just four days as they welcome Villarreal to Old Trafford – a repeat of last season’s Europa League final.

Having already lost one game in the group stages, victory over Unai Emery’s side is already a must if they want to avoid a repeat of the disappointing exit out of the tournament last year.
