Manchester United midfield duo Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro have been named in the Europa League Team of the Season by UEFA’s Technical Observer Group.

United enjoyed an unbeaten run in the competition until Wednesday evening, when they suffered defeat in the final at the hands of Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

Brennan Johnson’s first-half goal was all Tottenham needed to win the fixture, bring an end to their 17-year wait for a trophy and condemn United to what is now undoubtedly the worst season in their modern history.

United could finish as low as 17th in the top flight, which is just above the relegation zone.

After the final whistle at San Mames, a dejected Fernandes spoke to the media and admitted that all the players needed to look in the mirror.

Luke Shaw also said that he and his teammates must ask themselves whether they’re good enough to play for a club of the size, history and relevance of United.

Despite the team’s calamitous performance in the final, Fernandes and Casemiro seemingly did just enough to secure themselves spots in the Europa Team of the Season.

The two form part of a midfield trio also consisting of Bodo/Glimt’s Patrick Berg.

Fernandes scored seven goals and provided an additional five assists in the Europa League. Casemiro scored two and assisted thrice.

They aren’t the only United players to earn recognition, as goals by Rasmus Hojlund, Mason Mount, and Kobbie Mainoo have been ranked among the tournament’s top ten strikes.

Hojlund’s opening goal against Bodo/Glimt has been nominated, while Mainoo’s strike in the thrilling comeback against Lyon and Mount’s long-range effort versus Athletic Club have also made the shortlist.

United are back in action on Sunday when they host Aston Villa in their final Premier League match of the season.
