Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce admits it was his mistakes that led to a defeat to Brighton in the Premier League.

The Magpies began the season with a good win over West Ham, but came back down to earth losing 3-0 at home to Brighton.

And Bruce admitted he did not do a good job from a tactical and selection standpoint.

Bruce told reporters: "We never gave ourselves a chance.

"The penalty was dubious. It looked soft.

"Then we've let them in again with a basic piece of play.

"We've been beaten badly at home.

"We have to accept we weren't good enough.

"That's what it is."

Bruce added: "When you're 2-0 down after seven minutes then it becomes difficult against a team who base their style on possession.

"We were better when we made from the change but I think it would have been unfair [not to start Andy Carroll] after the performance he had last week."
