Germany are through to the semi-finals of the U21 EURO after a thriller versus Italy. Eintracht’s German foursome now face one of their team-mates.

With a semi-final spot at the UEFA Under-21 Championship up for grabs, the match between Germany and Italy went down to the wire. The teams were locked at 2-2 with three minutes to go until penalties, when Nathaniel Brown set up Merlin Röhl in the 117th minute to seal a 3-2 win for Germany, which propelled them into the final four of the tournament.

Alongside Brown, who occupied his usual spot on the left flank, Nnamdi Collins was also in the starting XI for the third time at the continental competition. Elias Baum replaced him in the 100th minute, while Ansgar Knauff came on in the 62nd minute, making it four Eagles in action.

Five Eintracht players to face off in semi

The quarter-final between Denmark and France also saw five goals, all of them during the regular 90 minutes in this case. It was the French who ran out 3-2 winners, with Jean-Mattéo Bahoya – who recently made his U21 debut - an unused substitute this time around. Bahoya’s Frankfurt team-mate Oscar Højlund, who likewise made his U21 bow earlier in the tournament, was on the bench for the Danes.

Elsewhere, the United States made it three wins in as many matches in the group stage of the Gold Cup, rounding things off with a 2-1 victory over Haiti. Paxten Aaronson was brought on during the closing stages, with USA now set to play Costa Rica in the quarter-finals.
