Markus Krösche, Oliver Glasner and Sebastian Rode bemoan the number of mistakes in the 3-1 defeat at Leverkusen, but aren’t losing sight of their objectives. The post-match reaction.

Board member for sport Markus Krösche: “This was an avoidable defeat. We’re making too many simple mistakes. Going behind against a counter-attacking team like Leverkusen obviously doesn’t make it easier. We need to manage to play 90 minutes without making mistakes. It’s obviously a setback in terms of the table, but we need to keep looking at ourselves and change the things we’re talking about. We won’t alter our target. Only the final position matters.”

Head coach Oliver Glasner: “Congratulations to Xabi Alonso and Bayer Leverkusen on the win. From our point of view it’s hard to take because we brought the three goals we conceded on ourselves. Leverkusen used their main strength of transitioning with pace in attack perfectly. On the whole we made too many mistakes in defence and weren’t effective enough going forward. Before the first goal, for example, it was a chain reaction of technical errors and being too slow to act. The boys will get two days off over Easter, which they’ve earned despite the defeat.”

Sebastian Rode: “Leverkusen were the more effective team today and better in the final third. We conceded the goals in the first half too easily and played into their hands with their pace. We gave away the ball too easily in the build-up to the goals and then were always a step too late. Because of that it was difficult to get back into it in the second half. We’d imagined things differently. It is what it is now, so now it’s about going again next week. There are still seven matches left. We’re not the first team to have lost at Leverkusen. We have to focus on ourselves and get the points elsewhere.”
