Bristol City are reportedly closing in on the signing of Luton Town forward Harry Cornick.

According to Football Insider, the Robins are in advanced talks to sign Cornick ahead of tonight’s 11pm deadline.

Cornick has emerged as one of City’s top targets in recent days, but they faced significant competition to land his signature with fellow Championship side Swansea City also submitting a bid last week, as per Football Insider.

The 27-year-old joined the Hatters from Bournemouth in 2017 when the club were in League Two and he has enjoyed a hugely successful spell at Kenilworth Road, helping them to back-to-back promotions, before scoring 13 goals last season as they reached the Championship play-offs.

But Cornick’s contract at the club expires in the summer and Luton are supposedly willing to let him depart this month rather than losing him for free in the summer.

Cornick has scored two goals and registered four assists in 23 appearances in all competitions for the Hatters this campaign as they once again push for the top six, but manager Rob Edwards admitted that there has been interest in Cornick and refused to rule out an exit.

“There is interest there, but what I will say on it is Corns is someone I admire, I love working with him,” Edwards told Luton Today.

“He’s a good footballer, we’re going to have interest in some of our players.

“What I have to stress now is that I believe we will be in a really good position come the end of this window.”

The Robins are in need of attacking reinforcements after Antoine Semenyo’s departure to Bournemouth and with Tommy Conway out injured. In addition to Cornick, the club are reportedly optimistic of completing the signing of Wycombe Wanderers’ Anis Mehmeti before the closure of the window.

The verdict

Cornick would be an excellent signing for Bristol City.

He has proven himself to be a dangerous attacking threat at this level in recent years and he will fit in well to a Robins’ side already containing a number of creative players.

It is a blow for Luton to lose Cornick in their play-off push, but he will be a useful asset to Nigel Pearson as he aims to continue to move City up the table.

With his contract set to expire at Kenilworth Road, the Robins will be able to secure the deal for a cut-price fee and that could look something of a bargain in the years to come.
