The Robins knew that they had to defeat the Barclays Women’s Super League title hopefuls to keep their extremely slim survival hopes alive, however, Manchester City were just too strong for them over the course of 90 minutes.
To their credit, Bristol City defended resolutely against Manchester City for more than an hour. The Cityzens finally broke the deadlock through Mary Fowler’s crisp 62nd-minute strike. Fowler soon added a second goal from close range before an Amy Rodgers own goal made it 3-0. Manchester City went on to net another goal in second half injury time when Alex Greenwood got on the end of a corner kick.
The result means that Bristol City’s return to the English top flight has lasted just one season. Lauren Smith’s side have found points hard to come by this season, especially on home soil. The Robins have collected just a single point in 2024 and it is that run of poor form that has ultimately sent them back to the Barclays Women’s Championship.
Bristol City boss Smith has put together a young side with a lot of potential and they will be hopeful of bouncing back next season.
