Bristol City are no strangers to cashing in on their rising stars.
The Championship club’s chiefs have admitted in the past that developing players – be it academy products or cheap signings – and then selling for a profit is a key part of their business plan.
Even so, it is still difficult for Robins supporters to see their bright talents sold to other clubs and you feel it is going to be particularly gutting for them when they have to bid farewell to Alex Scott, which they inevitably will soon.
The 19-year-old has established himself as one of, if not the most exciting young player in the EFL over the past 18 months. He’s grown into one of the most important players in Nigel Pearson’s squad and delivered some outstanding performances – with his sparkling displays in recent wins against Preston North End and West Bromwich Albion just two examples.
But his talent is certainly no secret. A host of Premier League clubs were linked with a move for Scott in January and teammate Kal Naismith has recently revealed that the South West club rejected offers for him.
Warding off interest in the winter window was the right call from the Robins hierarchy, particularly given they sold Antoine Semenyo, and that the midfielder’s contract runs until 2025.
But unfortunately, there is a growing feeling that they will not be able to do the same in the summer.

City owner Steve Lansdown previously revealed a new contract had been offered to Scott to ward off Premier League interest but it would be a surprise to see him sign that while reports have suggested that the teenager was happy to stay at Ashton Gate in January but will look to choose his next club in the summer.
The Robins must brace themselves for a busy summer as the Premier League links have already begun and are unlikely to slow down.
The Athletic reported this morning that Wolves are monitoring Scott and have creative players high on their list of priorities for the next transfer window.
Everton and Tottenham were two of the other clubs said to have a long-standing interest in the midfielder and it would be a surprise if they did not make a move when the time comes this summer.
Such is the 19-year-old’s bright talent, that clubs are likely to be queuing up to try and prize himself away from Ashton Gate. In January, £25 million was touted as the price to do that.
Whether or not that will be higher in the summer remains to be seen but one thing is for certain, the Robins need to be ready to field plenty of calls concerning their rising star.
