Bristol City manager Nigel Pearson has confirmed that the club have activated the one-year option on Antoine Semenyo’s contract to keep him at Ashton Gate until the summer of 2024, speaking to Bristol Live.

The 22-year-old may have only scored three times in 18 league appearances – but with eight goals and 12 assists to his name in 31 Championship games last term – he has already proven his worth at this level.

Leroy Lita

Yes No

Although he was unable to make much of an impact for the Black Stars, he could be crucial to his domestic side during the second half of this season as they look to record a much-improved league finish from last term.

However, it’s currently unclear whether he will remain at Ashton Gate beyond next month, with AFC Bournemouth, Fenerbahce and Scottish Premiership duo Celtic and Rangers all being linked with a move for him.

His contract was previously set to expire in the summer but with the club having the option to extend his deal by a further 12 months, this is an option they have taken up already according to Pearson.

The Verdict:

This is a good idea because Semenyo will want certainty over his future, even though it was pretty much guaranteed that the Robins would end up taking that option on his deal.

With 18 months now left on his contract, they should be able to generate a decent amount of money for him and may decide to cash in on him, not just to purchase other players but to potentially give them the license to retain other key assets.

They will also be wary about the possibility of the Ghanaian leaving the club on the expiration of his contract with Han Noah-Massengo looking set to depart Ashton Gate for nothing in the summer.

And if a suitable offer comes in for him, it would be difficult to see the Robins holding onto him unless they decide to let go of Scott.

The latter’s contract doesn’t expire until 2025 though and that’s one reason why it would make more sense for Pearson’s side to offload Semenyo as opposed to the teenager.

It remains to be seen whether a side will come in with a big enough bid for him though, with the market still likely to be impacted by the financial effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.
