One name that has been doing the rounds as of late in terms of transfer dealings is Owen Humphries and it is looking increasingly likely that he may end up in the EFL sooner rather than later.

As reported by The Star, Sheffield Wednesday have been keeping tabs on the 19-year-old’s situation and could swoop to bring him in before the end of the month. However, it won’t be easy to seal a deal for him considering that the same report now reveals that Bristol City and Swansea City also have an interest in his services.

Both the Robins and the Swans are a league higher than Wednesday, so the lure of a move to the Championship could appeal to the player more so than League One. However, the third tier might present more opportunities for him to get regular action and that in itself could be a selling point.

Did Swansea sell Connor Roberts to Burnley in 2021?

Yes No

Right now, Humphries hasn’t even got the chance to try his luck in the EFL, as he is plying his trade for Larkhall Athletic in non-league.

Sheffield Wednesday though have been able to run the rule over him by signing him on a trial basis. He’s played for the club’s reserve team and it has enabled Darren Moore’s side to properly look at whether he wants to bring the youngster in permanently or not.

Bristol City and Swansea have not had that honour yet – but they have still shown their interest and it means there could be a three-way battle to try and secure his signature. It isn’t clear who might win that yet but what is clear is that his non-league days may soon be over.

The Verdict

Owen Humphries is a name that will be unfamiliar to many but several EFL sides have seen something in him and there certainly must be talent in the 19-year-old to warrant such interest.

Having been taken on trial already and with so many clubs sniffing around him, he seems to be a decent enough player and one that may have the potential to develop into a solid addition to any side that bags a deal for him. Whilst his only experience has been in non-league so far, some exposure to Football League action could certainly get him up to scratch soon.

While no deals are yet officially on the table, it does look like the EFL may beckon for the player. Rather than stay in non-league, there could be the chance here for Humphries to make a huge leap into either the Championship or League One.

Sheffield Wednesday seems like the best option right now, as the club being a division lower will surely mean more chance of at least a few cameos for now. The Championship though can be a tempting proposition.
