Meanwhile, when one includes those who retired, the Bats lost 14 players out of the 28 that finished the 2024 season on the roster.

As such, the announcement of Midge Purce's return for the 2025 season was the greatest news Gotham FC fans could hear. She is loved on and off the pitch, and it was good to see a free agent return to the club. Plus, the forward's new contract is extremely important for Gotham.

The main reason why is due to the offseason. There were so many big-name departures that Gotham FC fans might have gone completely insane if Purce did not re-sign. It is only a one-year contract, but another year is better than none. Additionally, as mentioned, she is loved by the supporters because of her play on the pitch, her work off the pitch, and her personality.

Moreover, the numerous departures meant that only 13 players were returning before Purce's new contract. With the winger's addition, the Bats now have half of last year's roster back with the team. It does not make up for the drastic turnover, but it slightly softens the blow.

Purce's return also means there is at least one more player who has been with the club for multiple years. Most of the team has signed in 2023, 2024, or 2025. Therefore, this brings back some consistency, even on a smaller scale.

Playing wise, she is now another option in the attack. She can contribute via assists and goals. Also, Purce is known for her dribbling, which should help Gotham in attacking sequences. When healthy, she is usually a starter, so once she is 100%, supporters should expect her to start most of the matches. However, it might be some time before she is back to her normal self after the ACL injury.

Another reason why Purce's new contract is vital is because she is a leader. She wears the Gotham badge with pride and can help teach the new players, especially the rookies, what it means to play for the Bats.
