Brighton vs Aston Villa - Preview, prediction, team news and lineups

Villa had enjoyed five successive victories over Brighton, before failing to win either of the last two, meaning the Seagulls are seeking successive home wins over the Villans for the first time since 1972.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Aston Villa Preview

Just two points and two places seperate these two sides, so a victory for either would go along way to enhancing their European aspirations. Of the pair, Brighton & Hove Albion kick off slightly better off, having collected a very impressive 13 points from their last five Premier League fixtures. The Seagulls put together a sequence of four successive league wins, before earning a credible 2-2 draw with Manchester City, equalising twice at the Etihad, unlucky not to leave victorious.

However, on Saturday evening, Fabian Hürzeler's team were dumped out of the FA Cup, beaten by Nottingham Forest on penalties at the Amex, following a very uneventful 120+ minutes. So, Albion supporters will not be heading to Wembley this month, but they could be preparing for a European tour later this year. The Seagulls are currently seventh, which would be enough to secure Europa League qualification, while a victory here could see them end the night in a Champions League spot.

Aston Villa meanwhile will be targeting a victory that would see them leapfrog their hosts, currently just below the potential European spots. The Villans endured a five-match winless streak during January and February, but have won two of their last three in the league, most-recently beating Brentford, with Ollie Watkins the only scorer in West London.

Then, unlike their hosts, Unai Emery's team reached the FA Cup semi-finals this weekend, swatting aside Preston North End at Deepdale. Marcus Rashford bagged a quick-fire brace, before Jacob Ramsey made the win secure. Given that the Claret and Blue Army are still involved in the Champions League, set to face PSG in Paris next Tuesday, this is their first of, at least, 12 matches in the next 53 days, and they need points to ensure they'll be back in UEFA competition next season too.

Brighton & Hove Albion Team News

Fabian Hürzeler is still without Jason Steele, Igor, Ferdi Kadıoğlu, Joël Veltman, Tariq Lamptey, James Milner, Mats Wieffer and Solly March, while Adam Wesbter is a doubt, having hobbled off at the weekend. Thus, Lewis Dunk, who featured for the first time since 8 February on Saturday, will come into defence.

Elsewhere, in attack, Georginio Rutter also suffered a knock against Nottingham Forest, so João Pedro could come in alongside Danny Welbeck, something rarely seen from the start.

Brighton & Hove Albion predicted lineup vs Aston Villa: (4-4-1-1): Verbruggen; Hinshelwood, Dunk, van Hecke, Estupiñán; Baleba, Ayari, Minteh, Mitoma; João Pedro, Welbeck.

Brighton & Hove Albion Players to Watch vs Aston Villa

Kaoru Mitoma has eight goals to his name this season, although he's yet to score or win against Aston Villa in three attempts, seeking to change both facts on Wednesday.

Aston Villa Team News

Unai Emery now has options and, given Villa's congested fixtures schedule, he's going to need them. Pau Torres, an unused substitute for the last two domestic matches, could feature in the league for the first time since Brighton visited Villa Park in December, suffering a metatarsal fracture that night.

Elsewhere, fit again trio Amadou Onana, John McGinn and Ollie Watkins all came off the bench at Deepdale, so will any start this time? Well, after both Jacob Ramsey and Marcus Rashford scored against Preston, the latter bagging his first goals for the club, they'll take some shifting.

Aston Villa Player to Watch vs Brighton & Hove Albion

Ollie Watkins has 14 goals to his name this season, while he has scored more goals in his career against Brighton than any other opponent, seven in only eight encounters.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Aston Villa Prediction

We find this mid-week match-up too close to call, hence why we're sitting on the fence and forecasting a score draw that doesn't really help either: Brighton & Hove Albion 1-1 Aston Villa.
